PLURAL

The European Research & Innovation project PLURAL funded by the Horizon 2020 programme aims to design, validate and demonstrate a palette of versatile, adaptable, scalable, off-site prefabricated Plug-and-Use kits. The objectives of the project will be achieved through international cooperation of 18 partners from 7 European countries with overall budget of 9,5 million EUR. Reduction of energy consumption and emissions in buildings is vital in meeting the EU's climate and energy targets for 2030. The NZEB (Near Zero Energy Building) concept requires a high level of energy efficiency, in combination with on-site renewable energy use/production. NZEB, can be leveraged further by prefabrication of building renovation components which enables improved quality control and shorter renovation times, since it reduces the duration of production and installation phases. Aligning prefabrication to Building Information Modelling (BIM) further facilitates coordination of manufacturing and preassembly (off-site and on-site) and improves engineering and construction management, bringing substantial benefits (time, cost, and quality) to the project owners. PLURAL proposes an integrated “Plug-and-play” solution meeting the above challenges, that takes into account User needs, which is hence named “Plug-and-Use” – PnU – kits. Key to achieving these goals is to understand how to select and integrate various renewable energy technologies from the many available, incorporate them in prefabricated façade components and optimise their performance for different building types, climates and socio-economic conditions. Also, how to best manufacture them minimising energy use and material waste. All the above in the context of BIM (Building information modelling) process.

CORE (Science & Human Factor for Resilient Society

CORE (sCience& human factOr for Resilient sociEty) is a multi-disciplinary consortium established to understand how to define common metrics with respect to the different natural and man-made disaster scenarios, and how to measure, control and mitigate the impact on the populations, particularly on vulnerable groups: disabled, elderly, poor, as well as women and children. It contributes to Horizon 2020’s focus on secure societies where citizens are facing increasingly threatening situations. Recent natural and man-made disasters have shown gaps in the level of preparedness of European society for disasters, highlighting the importance of increasing risk awareness, which ensures a direct positive impact on citizen and organisational resilience among people and decision-makers in Europe. CORE will identify and use best practice and knowledge/learning from certain countries, such as Japan which experienced high levels of seismic, volcanic and tsunami risks but where risk awareness is high. It will provide optimized actions and solutions to help restructure and rebuild socio-economic structures after a disaster, across and outside Europe (Israel, India & Japan), where it will have access, through the end-users, to the relevant base of knowledge. CORE will lead to more efficient and effective policies, governance structures and broad awareness and collaboration among citizens, as well as between citizens and rescue agencies. Best practice and best procedures will be identified and reported to policymakers, end-users and disseminated to all stakeholders and NGOs. CORE will devote great attention to education in schools, making the young generation a sort of "prevention sentinels".

Real-Time Faecal Coliform Water Quality Monitoring in Chicago, USA

Total coliforms, E.coli or faecal coliforms are probably the most important water quality parameters there are for recreational water bodies such as rivers, lakes, water parks or marine bathing waters. However, the decision to allow such water bodies to be fit for recreational activities typically takes 24-72 hours -- when relying on traditional lab testing methods -- after the water sample has been taken. Delays even as short as 1-2 hours can be too late to prevent people from being subjected to unnecessary levels of pollution and, potentially, becoming ill as a result. With the increasing popularity of open-water swimming it will become even more important to monitor water resources as close to real time as possible. In an exciting new project, and the first ever in the USA, the Proteus is being used as an environmental guardian for all those people who want to use the Chicago River for recreational activities such as boating, fishing, kayaking, or commerce. It will allow users to simply load up a bookmarked website, check the real-time water quality and make a more informed decision about interacting with the waterway. Currently, monthly water samples tested by traditional lab methods are used to measure faecal coliform levels. With Proteus sensors, the public and local water authorities will now gain real-time, hourly data that will provide them with unprecedented insights into local water quality conditions.

Greening Kuwadzana

The persistent growth of socio-economic and environmental inequalities is greatly compromising human development and the achievement of sustainable development goals especially on low income earners in high density suburbs in Africa in general, and Zimbabwe in particular. Low income earners are the most affected by climate change, especially as far as health is concerned. It is high density suburbs such as Kuwadzana that have very few trees, maintained parks or functional recreational spaces, and this is where refuse is seldom collected. This compromises the quality of our lives. On the other hand, several studies have demonstrated that exposure to natural environment, or ‘green spaces’ has an independent influence on health and health-related behaviours, and that income-related inequality in health is less marked among populations with greater exposure to green space because it has the potential to modify pathways through which lower socio-economic position can lead to disease. It is within this context that we find it necessary to lead a massive ‘Green the City’ project that started in Kuwadzana. So far we have planted and are maintaining 1000+ trees. The target is to plant at least 5000 trees in Kuwadzana between 2020 and 2025 and to educate as many residents as possible on the importance of trees and protecting the environment. Our goal is to improve the health of high density suburbs by reducing effects of pollution and climate change through increasing the number of trees, to improve the diet of the community by planting fruit trees in schools, churches and appropriate public spaces designated by the city council, and to beautify our streets with a canopy of trees and so on.

Seeds for the Future Campaign

The Seeds for the Future Campaign is a scheme that empowers schools to establish Fruit Tree Nurseries in their backyards as a way of fighting Climate Change. We are reawakening schools into becoming important stakeholders in the fight against Climate Change and also recognising the role of children as agents in making the world a better place for us all. Schools have for so long been used as only learning centres where children go to simply learn and pass exams. We are changing this narrative by engaging schools to become solution – based Institutions as far as combating deforestation in Uganda is concerned. We are engaging them to into action that will see them produce 6000 fruit trees each every single year. We envision a world where every school has its own Fruit Tree Nursery from which tree seedlings are derived and planted not only within the school, but also in the neighbourhood and children plus school staff take some home for planting.

Horizon 2020 SUSTAINair Project

One of the EU’s priorities is to advance the design, production and field operation of multifunctional and intelligent airframe and engine parts. New technologies emerging because of advances in European research and innovation can help meet this goal. However, key obstacles surrounding the entire aircraft component value chain will need to be overcome first. Tackling these challenges, the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project SUSTAINair project aims to address each stage of the component value chain by developing and introducing novel concepts and techniques that will shape design, manufacturing, maintenance, repair, overhaul and recycling processes for lightweight, multifunctional and intelligent airframe and engine parts. SUSTAINair applies circular economy principles to the design, manufacturing, operations, and end-of-life phases of aircraft. SUSTAINair is researching and developing solutions to increase resource efficiency and aircraft performance while cutting down on waste and material costs throughout the aircraft life cycle, what is known as circular aviation. The central approach of SUSTAINair is to substantially increase the sustainability of the airframe value chain by achieving a paradigm shift in aircraft manufacturing. As such, the project has been endorsed by the Future Sky flagship program of EREA - Association of European Research Establishments in Aeronautics. SUSTAINair brings together 11 European research and industry partners, and is coordinated by the Austrian Institute of Technology - Light Metals Competence Centre AIT-LKR.

Horizon 2020 VIRTIGATION project

Viral diseases are not only affecting European fields and greenhouses: across the globe, from Morocco, Israel to India, tomatoes and cucurbits are vital staple crops that are under threat. Colossal losses in harvests have been reported, ranging from 15% to entire crop destruction. As the world needs to increase its food production by at least half by 2050 to feed a growing population, mitigating the devastating impact of plant diseases is essential to ensure sufficient food supply, both in quantity and quality. In response to this global threat, VIRTIGATION – Emerging viral diseases in tomatoes and cucurbits: implementation of mitigation strategies for durable disease management -, is a Horizon 2020 project on a mission to protect tomatoes and cucurbits in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean Basin. In collaboration with partners from key EU neighboring areas and trade partners across the globe – Morocco, Israel and India – VIRTIGATION will develop short-, medium- and long-term solutions to the emerging viral diseases caused by begomoviruses (whitefly-transmitted) and tobamoviruses (mechanically transmitted) on tomato and cucurbit crops. The VIRTIGATION project will further increase the know-how for better control and management of these viral diseases in the entire tomato and cucurbit value chain, thanks to its multi-actor approach anchored in co-creation and co-design. VIRTIGATION is running for 4 years (June 2021 – May 2025) and is coordinated by the Laboratory for Tropical Crop Improvement at the Department of Biosystems of KU Leuven (Belgium).

Let us mitigate the cutting down of trees for the purpose of charcoal mining

Traditional charcoal mining in Africa is one the leading factor now causing deforestation, many people have engaged on charcoal producing which involves in cutting down of trees. The trade in charcoal in Africa is booming to the extent that environmental campaigners are left worried. We all know deforestation has a devastating impact and is not always visible immediately. In some cases, the impact may take years to materialize, but it is inevitable Our Solution Our Solution is to train people especially young people on producing Briquettes out of agricultural waste materials that is eco-friendly and cost-effective. Problem Africa is a is the second largest continent but it consume more charcoal than all over the European countries combined. In order to maintain a household in Africa, a family utility one ton of charcoal annually. This is equivalent to cutting of 80 million size of trees. Billions of trees has to be cut down every year. This innovation will helps to solve this problem.

Floodgate - climate crisis play @EdFringe 22-27th 8pm

Floodgate, at the Fringe Festival from the 22nd-27th of August, 8pm at the Space @ Niddry Street. Floodgate addresses our climate crisis with fierce honesty and daring provocation. Set in a dystopian future, our play interrogates feelings of guilt and personal responsibility through the most relatable thing of all: family. ‘It is 2081. A coastal town is quiet, deserted by those seeking higher ground. As three siblings clear out their grandma’s belongings, they find a diary left behind that will change everything. When the floodgates open, will they sink or swim?’

SUSFERT – Developing multifunctional fertilisers for phosphorus and iron supply

Agriculture heavily depends on the use of non-renewable, resource-intense fertilisers to meet the ever rising demand for food and feed. Ninety per cent of phosphorus, which is the major component of fertiliser, is mined abroad and imported into the EU. Phosphorus has been identified as a critical, unsustainable resource that drives the need to find alternative sources of the mineral from waste streams. The Horizon 2020/BBI JU funded project SUSFERT is developing new bio-based fertilisers to reduce dependency on unsustainable phosphorus imports into the EU. These fertilisers include novel controlled-release coatings from lignin as well as lignosulfonate-based soil improvers originating from wood pulp. Waste side-streams, such as renewable struvite, is utilised to substitute imported phosphorus. The loss of nutrients from fertilisers in agriculture are being addressed by using probiotics to increase nutrient availability as the demand for sustainable food production rises.

The System of Rice Intensification: SRI-2030

The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is a cost-effective, available solution for farmers and their nations to manage land and water resources while addressing social, climate, and food security issues. SRI is a proven set of eco-friendly agroecological crop management principles demonstrated to raise rice production by 25–50%, and even up to 100% or more, while lowering production costs and raising farmer incomes. Seed requirements are reduced by 80-90% and water by between 30-50%. Notably, SRI practices are beneficial for the climate, as methane emissions are reduced by up to 70%; and overall net greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 50% or more per kilogram of rice produced. SRI crops are more resilient to climate hazards such as drought, storms, and pests. Importantly, SRI is accessible to low-income households as no external inputs are required, meaning SRI is a highly cost-effective solution and triple-win for rural households, their country, and the planet together. SRI was identified by Project Drawdown as a leading solution to the climate crisis, requiring only a change in mindsets, not materials. SRI-2030 is an initiative working to achieve Drawdown’s goal of 50 million hectares by a more ambitious target of 2030 for accelerated and amplified results.
