Description

CONSERVAL is a collaborative project between Spain and Portugal co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund ERDF through the Interreg V-A Spain-Portugal Programme (POCTEP) 2014-2020, which aims to develop technologies for the recovery of by-products and waste water from the canning sector in Galicia and Northern Portugal. More specifically, CONSERVAL aims to transform these solid and liquid streams into products with greater added value and high business potential, such as specific volatile fatty acids, fish oils with a high Omega 3 content and high value protein hydrolysates.

Objectives

Analysis and impact of the canning sector in Galicia and Northern Portugal: to know the reality of the canning sector in terms of management and recovery of by-products and waste water at present in the Galicia-North Portugal Euroregion.

Production of volatile fatty acids from waste water from the canning industry: to develop technologies for the targeted production of AGVs, as well as process optimisation and purification of AGVs from waste water from the canning industry.

Obtaining oils and proteins from by-products and waste water from the canning industry: to develop technologies for obtaining fish oils with a high Omega-3 content and high value-added protein concentrates from by-products and wastewater.

Transfer, internationalisation and exploitation of results: to transfer the results of the project to the interested agents to ensure the sustainability of the project and to evaluate the exploitation of the results/technologies, looking for a multiplier effect.

Management and coordination of results.

Communication: to promote awareness in the canning sector of the importance of applying innovative technologies to improve competitiveness; to make society aware of the concept of the circular economy and to promote networking among the beneficiaries and end users of the project.

Impacts

CONSERVAL promotes the modernization of the canning sector with a sustainable management model that contributes to the preservation of the marine space, while promoting the economic growth of the region. The project will implement an innovative circular economy model that minimizes the environmental impact on natural watercourses and uses marine resources more efficiently.

CONSERVAL aims to implement a circular economy model that will improve the competitiveness of companies in the canning sector.

Thanks to resource recovery, CONSERVAL contributes to the preservation of marine space and natural channels, while reducing dependence on exhaustible and fossil resources and minimizing the generation of non-biodegradable waste.

The project will be developed in a responsible and integrative way with all the agents involved in the value chain.

CONSERVAL promotes the economic growth of the Galicia-North Portugal Euroregion. It will also promote the creation of qualified employment and open up new market niches in the region.
